Why People Are Not Buying From You in Direct Sales

This is the number one complaint from direct sellers: “No one is buying from me.” My guess is you are doing something that you may not even know you are doing and it’s why people are not buying from you. What are some of those things you are doing that are pushing people away?

You’re Not Talking About Your Opportunity in the Right Way

First, it’s probably that you are not talking about your opportunity in the right way. I was talking to a girl over the weekend and I asked her what she did for a living. Before even telling me what she did, she immediately gave me a disclaimer that most people think what she does is a pyramid scheme. That sent red flags to me and I’m sure to everyone she says that too. Don’t start with what you DON’T do.

When you are talking about your products or even your opportunity, make sure you are showing them how your product or opportunity solves a pain point. What is the problem that you solve with your products? If you don’t understand that, you are going to have a very hard time selling. If you are doubting the opportunity or products and are unsure of yourself, so are other people! It’s the vibe you are giving out.

Too Much Talking, Not Enough Listening.

When we go on and on about our product or service, we scare people off. So when you first start talking about all your excitement, be careful not to overwhelm them. Instead you need to be a really good investigator. You need to talk to them and find out what problems THEY have. Allow them some talking time and have a conversation, not a presentation.

Let’s say I am a Plexus consultant. If I am talking with someone, I want to figure out what problem(s) they have that my product can solve. The biggest issue Plexus products solve is gut health. So I know I am listening to see if this person has any gut issues that are troubling them.

Then I want to get the person to start talking about their gut and their issues. When they start telling you that they are struggling with energy or pain, then you can open the door to your story and how this product has helped you with that specific problem. They are more likely to say “I need that!”

Show Them Your Product or Service is the Fastest Way to Get Them to Where They Want to Be.

Then we are going to SHOW them that our products are the fastest way to get them to where they want to be. They are telling you this information because they are actively looking for a solution. They are not telling you all of this just to complain.

If you have their desired solution, of course they are going to buy from you! The more you can show them how to get from Point Pain to Point Solution, it doesn’t matter the price, they will buy.

People buy because of two things: They either want to get out of pain or closer to pleasure. What is the last thing you bought? Why did you buy it?

Way back in the day when I first started with Mary Kay, the first thing they taught us was all about the company. From the year it was established to what it represented. Our uplines wanted us to know we were a part of building that direct sales company’s credibility.

But this strategy only benefits the company, not the distributor. This all comes back to branding. I have recorded a couple videos about branding and you can access them here.

Brand Yourself, Not Your Company

Branding is developing yourself. It is the art of making yourself identifiable in how you look, what you represent, and how you make people feel. Create a brand around whatever you love the most about your direct sales company or product. Your company becomes a piece of you and your brand. Your company should NOT be all there is to you. Tune into this podcast episode all about branding yourself, not your company.

Maybe you like to help people with makeup. If that’s your thing, you are likely super passionate about it. What comes from being passionate about makeup? You feel more confident and beautiful. These are the outcomes you are going to be talking about rather than talking about the company information. It’s all about those results you will be producing.

Treat Your Business Like a Business

It took me a really long time to understand what that meant. I thought I was treating my business like a business, but I wasn’t. I didn’t have that CEO mindset because I never knew what it was like to be a CEO. It wasn’t until I started investing in myself to learn more about how businesses really work. That’s when I really understood what ‘treat your business like a business’ meant.

I started paying attention to the numbers and marketing. I began to really adopt the CEO mindset at that point. Looking at the WHOLE scope of my business not the health of the company I was with was when things really began to change.

Having an email list is the lifeblood of your business. I knew every single month I could send one or two emails out and meet that $500 minimum Scentsy had required for us to receive our downline pay. Understanding how a business actually works will help you treat your business like a legit business.

Why Cold Messaging Won’t Grow Your Business

Don’t randomly message people. Do businesses in your town do that to you? Does your local dealership call you when they get a new vehicle model in and persuade you to buy it? Does your local flower shop call you and tell you all the reasons why you should buy their flowers? They don’t. Neither should you. Treat your business like a real business.

I looked at the coaching industry and was able to craft my business around strategies that worked for them. They were selling the result via webinars which is one of the best ways to get yourself out there. So I created my program around that and watched my business flourish.

Always be Reading to Develop Your CEO Mindset

I hated to read in school. The first chapter book I ever read was in 4th grade. Even in high school I hated it. Eventually I discovered I really like listening to books. I get on Audible and listen to 2-3 books a month. I love marketing books. Marketing is something that I am really passionate about and I love learning new strategies.

Find something you are passionate about. It could be a business or personal development book. There is one book called Great By Choice. He talks about businesses over the last 20 years. He looks at different companies and talks about things they did that kept them innovative even during recessions. Reading gives lots of information and inspiration. (A good money mindset book is Secrets of The Millionaire Mind).

When it comes to fear, every single person is going to feel this at some point. What are some of the things that are stopping you from being successful in your business? What are you feeling fearful about?

Growing a business and putting yourself out there is scary. It just is. You could be an extrovert and love talking to people all day long. However, if you are like me, you might be an introvert who is fearful of people. I have a hard time talking to people and putting myself out there.

When you have to reach out to people, that could be a really scary thing. You start thinking about all of the reasons it’s not going to work and how people are going to reject you. This is a legitimate fear.

What you are offering is amazing. You have had experiences that have impacted your life and you just want to share about it now. (Learn how to set yourself apart from thousands in your industry!) But what if you put yourself out there and it doesn’t resonate with anyone? Fear begins to creep in.

So then what if rejection happens? What’s the worst case scenario? One of the ways to get over your fear is to face it head on. If it really did happen, what would you do? Your fear is often bigger than the actual worst case scenario. You can have a back up plan.

You don’t want to stay stuck there though! You want to say if that does happen, that’s okay I have a back up plan.

The thing I have found is when you are on this journey and you are really discovering the person that God wants you to be ad you are fulfilling your purpose there’s going to be things that are going to crash around you.
Right before that happens it feels like your entire world crashes around you. When this happens, your only option is to succeed.

My story.



I was hundreds of dollars in debt. It almost bankrupted us. It wasn’t until I hit this rock bottom point that I was like “okay, I HAVE to make this work. My only option is success.” When I was able to really focus on that, that’s when my business really took off. That’s when I was successful.

Fear has come up in my life a lot in the past year. We moved from a city that we had lived in for our whole life. The home I brought my babies home to. It was SO hard to leave. But we knew we had to move to something better. When something awesome is going to happen you will start feeling resistance. It is normal. You have to rise up and get pressing on. We were three days away from closing on our house and had to make some BIG decisions. It took every ounce of security to be taken away for us to get to the promised land.

You can choose to fly or retreat and stay where it’s safe. Just know there is something amazing on the other side of that fear. When you retreat, that’s not where you grow. You must face your fear head on.

Ask yourself: What are the things I need to do to be successful? How do I need to show up?

New level, new devil.


You are always going to be doing this. But the more you recognize this in your life, the easier it is to break through another level of fear.

Your biggest fear in life should be when you get to the end you look back and see all that you COULD have been. Choose to show up now so you don’t have to reach the end and wish you would have done more and become more.

Myth #1: It’s all in the timing

Have you ever heard the saying “this is a ground floor opportunity?” Maybe someone was introducing you to a company and trying to get you to join them on their network marketing journey. This myth can be used as leverage for opportunity or can be used as an excuse for why distributors aren’t doing well in their company. Let’s bust through this first myth.

Does it help to be one of the first consultants in a brand new company? Of course! It helps you get the name out there and since it’s new and exciting allows you to reach out to more people. However it’s a ton of work. In the beginning there are a ton of unknowns. A company may not do very well.

I was of the first consultants of a new direct sales company. So I pushed it and I worked super hard. I built it up and a year and a half later the company went under. Joining a startup business can go either way.

When I was with Scentsy, I was not one of the first consultants to sign up. I knew a girl who was the 5th person in the company and she didn’t do much with it. So being FIRST doesn’t equal success. In a year’s time, I was making more money than she was. It’s NOT all about the timing. The question is really: How hard are you willing to work?

Myth #2: Saying your company is for EVERYONE

Have you heard this one? Of course you have! Your company probably tells you their product is for everyone and that is because they have consultants and distributors from a variety of backgrounds. But this is not quite right. You don’t want everyone to join your team. When you look at your product, sure it can be for everybody. But do you want to work with everybody? Sell to everybody? You need to know who your ideal customer avatar is.

Your goal should be to create a community of like-minded people who are like you. Because these are the kind of people you will do best with. From customers to business builders, these will be your people and you will be able to serve them.

I was a stay at home mom and feeling lonely. I longed to connect with other people who understood me. So these are the kinds of people I enjoyed connecting with. This community is also full of people I know how to help. Your job is to find out their problems and offer a solution.

Myth #3: Just don’t quit.

Your upline or friends in business may say some of these things:

“It’s okay you can do it.”

“You’ve got this.”

“You only fail if you quit.”

Well… the thing is if you don’t work your business, it’s not going to grow. Instead of saying “just don’t quit..” they really should say “just don’t stop taking action.” It’s daily action that will drive your business to success.

Let’s say you are trying to get parties booked and get your calendar full. If you just sit there hoping people will reach out, it’s not going to fill itself. Taking action can look like calling past hostesses, sending out messages to your WARM market, going LIVE, etc.

You also need to make sure you are making your asks and offers all about the person you are speaking to.

Find out what they really want. What are their pain points? What are their problems? How can you genuinely help them achieve what they are going after?

EP19: Knowing When to Quit

Let’s face it, network marketing is hard. Being an entrepreneur can be really hard. So, how do we know when we need to persevere and push through, or call it quits? Is it burnout, or are we trying to fit into a role that wasn’t meant to be ours? If you feel like the magic is gone, it may be time to start asking yourself the tough questions. Doing it now could save you from extreme burnout down the road. Learn how to align your business with your purpose, and be inspired to work, instead of dreading the next phone call or sales party.

When identifying whether you are facing the normal challenges of business, or something more substantial, it is important to identify whether or not the business you are part of aligns with your purpose and passion. It isn’t enough to love the product you are selling. It is important that selling the produce fulfills the purpose or need that defines your individual movement. For example, selling a product like Scentsy may seem trivial, on the surface it doesn’t seem like it would change someone’s life forever. However, if you find purpose and passion in cultivating families, selling a product that creates a more appealing home environment could give you that fulfillment.

One way to tell if you aren’t aligned with your business, is if it is difficult for you to create organic content that doesn’t feel “spammy.” If this feels impossible for you, if every post feels inauthentic then you are probably not aligned with the right company. Often, spammy posts happen because our only inspiration for copy comes from copying someone else. When you’re aligned with your purpose, content will come naturally. Do you feel resistance every time you post?

If you think that you might be in your business for the wrong reasons, take some time this week to ask yourself the hard questions. Is your motivation impact or income? Reach out to some trusted individuals who will give you an objective assessment.

Calling it quits doesn’t make you a quitter. Don’t waste another day aligning yourself with a company that doesn’t align with your purpose. Increase will follow your pursuit of impact.

HOW TO NEVER HAVE DECISION REMORSE

Hey, everyone. So excited to see you on here. If you guys have any questions feel free to type it in the chat or leave it in the comments and would love to get back to you. Today I want to talk about a topic that actually has been on my mind for a little while, and it’s how to never have remorse for any decisions that you make. I mean, how many of you have made bad decisions? Like I have made some pretty bad decisions in my life, and sometimes you make those decisions and you’re like, “Oh, I really wish that I never would have done that.”

I want to give you a way that you can look at any decision that you make and you can make sure you don’t have that remorse of like, “Oh, I wish I wouldn’t have made that decision.” That is to look at the ROI, so what does that mean? ROI stands for Return on Investment. So what is your return on investment for that one, think for that decision, what was it?

We hear a lot about return on investment in our business. Like, if I spend a dollar on Facebook ads and I end up making five dollars, that’s a great return on investment, right? I had one dollar, now I have five so I gain four more dollars. That is your rate of return, so your return on investment.

You also have other kinds of return on investment, think about if you do [Fairs and Shows 00:01:26]. If you spend, say a hundred dollars to get into a show and then you have all day that you’re selling stuff and you end up making 400 dollars after you paid off for all of your product and stuff like that, then that’s a good return on investment, right?

It was a great decision to do that show sometimes. I’ve had this happen to me before, I paid seven hundred dollars to get into a show and I only made a hundred dollars after I had sold all of my product, that was not a good return on investment. You can look at decisions and say, “Is this a good return or not?” But you can also use it in your everyday life, it doesn’t like necessarily have to be just what your business does. It doesn’t have to be money wise, it could be other things.

What made me start thinking about this is last week, I surprised my little girls and we took them to Disneyland. They got the whole princess treatment, they got their hair done and sparkles, and they got like the crowns on their heads, and their nails painted and makeup, and they were just in heaven. It was sixty dollars for them to do that. Now, some people will say, “You know, that’s a lot of money.” Some people may say, like, “Oh, that’s pretty good for what you get.” Like they got a backpack with all the stuff, but when they were done and they looked in the mirror and they did their little like a princess wave and everything, that was my return on investment, that was worth the money.

When you make decisions, even if it’s something like it was worth it to me like if any of you moms out there have little girls and like you just want them to be like these little princesses or something like that, like it melted my heart. It was so worth it for me as a mom, and I’m sure you’ve had other experiences with your kids where you’ve been able to give them experiences that it didn’t matter the cost because what you’ve got in return was so much more than what it actually cost you, even though it wasn’t like a direct return like you spend a dollar on Facebook ads and you get five dollars back.

Look at the decisions that you’re making and maybe it’s a bad decision that you made. Maybe you got married and you got a divorce, and it was a horrible divorce and everything was about it was bad, but I’m sure that you learned some things. So think about, what was my return on investment? Maybe you invested five years of your life to this person. What did you gain in return? I guarantee that you can find some good things. Maybe it was just, “I learned that in my next spouse, I need to look for this, this and this,” and it saved you a lot of time figuring that out because now you know exactly who you’re looking for. So maybe that’s one of those things.

This also goes into really being grateful for every situation that you’re in. I look at if you’ve been following me on Facebook, you know that a few weeks ago we got evacuated from our home because of a fire. The fire almost like wiped out my entire community, there was just miracle after miracle after miracle that it didn’t. I look at the return on investment of that fire. The fire, yes, it was a horrible thing and it made like six thousand people be evacuated. That’s a horrible thing.

But then I look at the return on investment for that because of all the miracles and everything that happened, I have a son who didn’t believe in God and he does now because he saw the hand of God work in those miracles. That to me is like the best return on investment that I could have.

When you look at those things and you see there may be a bad thing, always look for the good, what’s the return on the investment of that particular situation? I’ve had times where I invested in a coach and she was thousands of dollars and after about a month then, I realized you know what this really isn’t for me but because I had signed a contract I had to see in that contract. I looked and I was like, “There is no way I’m going to earn my money back, because everything that she’s teaching me is things that I already know, and I kind of had a bad attitude about it.”

Once I started looking at, “Okay, what’s my return on investment?” I really started the thinking, “Okay, what are the things that I can take and apply?” Then, I found that return on investment. Really for me, I think it was a little bit premature because the things that I learned from her are things now years later I’m starting to implement and is making the way that I run my company so much better.

Even though you may have done something that wasn’t like the best thing or maybe you invested in something that didn’t work very well and you were thinking, “Okay, this is what I thought.” Just like that show that I did, that was seven hundred dollars to get in and I only made a hundred, but I could look at, “Okay, what were the leads that I got, what were these things?” I know now, like I won’t do that show again but I also learned a lot of things of what made the next show that I did better.

If you’re analyzing this and I think this is something that like, we as normal, moms, dads, like human beings just going through our normal life, we don’t usually look at specific situations and analyze and be like, “What was the return on investment of that?” You know that’s not something that we normally do, but I found that when you look at whatever you’re investing, whatever if it’s a big decision and you’re like, “I’m not sure if this is what I should do. Look at what the return on investment is or what it could be.”

If you have multiple outcomes of a great return on investment then you know it’s going to be a good thing because if you hit this outcome or this outcome or this outcome and all of those things are positive there’s no way that you can have remorse on making that decision. And you always are looking for those things that you can do those return on your investment.

So if you guys have any questions about this or you want to know how you can start applying some maybe strategies in your business and see, “Okay, I want to make some decisions where I can get a return on investment,” because who wouldn’t want to spend a dollar on Facebook ads and make five back every single time like clockwork.

Be An Authentic Influencer

One of your missions is to show people that there’s a better way to do what is authentic to them. Not just in network marketing. But in the entrepreneur world. Oftentimes, you’ll hear all the experts and gurus saying, “You should do this. You should do that.” And if you do exactly what they say, you’ll be successful.

In contrast, that’s not how it is. If you stay true to who you are, you stay in your own lane and that’s when you become successful. There are a lot of success stories out there that you can derive your inspiration from. A lot of entrepreneurs have failed in the beginning of their business. They have taken risks and extracted all of their money then lost them all. Almost always, your business will not turn out so well in the initial stage. Just remember that maybe the reason you have to go through it all is it’s going to make your story better when you succeed.

Think of it as journey. An amazing journey where you’ll meet equally amazing people along the way. That they can help you with every single step that you’re going to take. Like the mentors that you’re going to have. Those “special” people will make you work harder and focus more on being better for your business. Essentially, they are the key to your success of being an authentic influencer.

Having a mentor is one of the crucial things that you have to learn. At first, you’re going to think that they are insane, so to speak.  They’re going to make you do things that you think are not essential to your business. But then, you’ll realize that they’re right! You’re going to do what told you and you’re going to be good at it eventually.

So, invest in them. Be open to things that are going to make you the best entrepreneur people will look up to.
