Finding Success in Leadership

Dr. Kimberly Hambrick started her career in the corporate world as an educational consultant. She worked within this industry for 30 years and focused on business and corporate development.
During this time, Kimberly realized she also had a talent for bringing different organizations together to win multi-million dollar projects. She was very successful and loved the work, but felt uneasy with some of the job's requirements and didn't enjoy putting people into leadership positions who were unequipped to do the job. Kimberly decided to change courses and start her own business, which focuses on leadership development.

Identifying your values is one of the first things Kimberly helps clients learn. Kimberly also believes that operating within those values is key to becoming a successful leader. If you don't follow your underlying beliefs, you may find that you are frustrated and angry.
After identifying your values, it's essential to think about your strengths. This is especially helpful for leaders who have oversight, among others. If you understand this concept first, you will be more likely to continue that success outward.
Once you feel comfortable with being a leader, you have to learn what that means and carry it outward. Strive not to micromanage and be willing to let others excel and thrive in what they are good at.
Some of the key concepts to understand when delegating tasks to team members are ensuring that team members understand expectations and what accountable measures look like. Having unclear expectations isn't fair to anyone involved with a project. Additionally, your team as a whole will benefit because everyone will be on the same page.
It's also important to recognize team members for their talents, skills, and success. Yet, how can you motivate the entire team when some are doing better than others? The answer is simple. Find meaningful ways to encourage each individual. You can even recognize others for their achievements in small gestures. Kimberly suggests making a habit of showing gratitude.

When you can help your team be the best they can be, you will be the kind of leader others will want to follow. You will treat those you work with as people, not competitors, and have the most success.
